Plant spacing and yield estimator for hydroponics and indoor growing

This plant spacing and yield estimator helps growers calculate how many plants can fit in a tent, tray, bed, bench, or grow room based on plant spacing, row layout, and total cultivation area. It is useful for hydroponic systems, coco grows, indoor gardens, greenhouse production, nursery layouts, and general garden planning.

The calculator also estimates plant density and total projected yield using your own yield-per-plant assumptions, helping you plan crop layout, irrigation zones, trays, pots, and canopy management more efficiently.

How this calculator works

In easy mode, the estimator uses total grow area and one spacing value to calculate approximate plant count. In advanced mode, it uses grow area dimensions, row spacing, plant spacing, and optional walkway or buffer allowances to estimate a more practical layout.

Area per plant = plant spacing × row spacing
Estimated plant count = usable area ÷ area per plant
Estimated total yield = plant count × yield per plant

What each parameter means

  • Grow area: total cultivation space available for the crop.
  • Plant spacing: center-to-center distance between plants.
  • Row spacing: distance between one row and the next.
  • In-row spacing: distance between plants within the same row.
  • Walkway / buffer: non-planting space reserved for access or clearance.
  • Yield per plant: your expected production per plant under your own conditions.
  • Plant density: number of plants per square meter or per square foot.

Why spacing matters

Plant spacing affects canopy development, airflow, irrigation access, light interception, maintenance, and overall yield strategy. Tighter spacing may increase plant count but can reduce airflow and working space. Wider spacing may improve canopy penetration and management but reduce the number of plants in the same area.

The best layout depends on crop type, container size, training method, irrigation system, climate, and target harvest style.

How to estimate yield

The yield section of this estimator uses your own expected yield per plant. That means the total yield result is a planning tool, not a guaranteed outcome. Real-world yield depends on genetics, light intensity, nutrient management, root zone health, training, irrigation, climate, and crop duration.

Use conservative yield assumptions for more realistic planning.

Best practice for growers

  1. Choose spacing based on plant size at full canopy, not only at transplant.
  2. Leave access space for irrigation, pruning, and harvest.
  3. Match tray, pot, or slab size to your plant density plan.
  4. Use realistic yield-per-plant numbers from your own grow style.
  5. Review spacing together with lighting, airflow, and irrigation layout.

About us. Our 9 year history

GoToGarden started in 2017 out of personal frustration. Our founder was a hobby grower who spent hours navigating online shops that felt built by people who had never touched a plant — cluttered layouts, vague product descriptions, no real guidance on what to actually buy or why. He knew there had to be a better way.
