Fertilizer ppm calculator for hydroponics and indoor growing

This fertilizer ppm calculator helps growers estimate the ppm contribution of a fertilizer based on how much product is added, how much water is used, and what percentage of a nutrient element is present in the fertilizer. It is useful for hydroponics, coco, fertigation, indoor growing, greenhouse feeding, and nutrient recipe planning.

Use it to estimate nitrogen ppm, phosphorus ppm, potassium ppm, calcium ppm, magnesium ppm, or any other nutrient element where you know the percentage content of the fertilizer being used.

How this ppm calculator works

The calculator first works out how much of the nutrient element is actually present in the fertilizer amount added. It then divides that nutrient mass by the water volume to estimate mg/L, which is numerically equivalent to ppm in dilute water-based solutions.

Nutrient mass = fertilizer amount × nutrient percentage
ppm = nutrient mass in mg ÷ water volume in liters
For many practical grow applications, 1 mg/L ≈ 1 ppm

What each parameter means

  • Fertilizer amount: how much product is added to the solution.
  • Water volume: total amount of water used for the nutrient solution.
  • Nutrient percentage: percentage of the target element inside the fertilizer.
  • ppm: estimated concentration of the nutrient element in the final solution.
  • mg/L: milligrams of nutrient per liter of water, numerically close to ppm for most grow solutions.

Why ppm matters

Ppm helps growers understand how much of a specific nutrient element is reaching the root zone. This is useful when designing feed recipes, comparing fertilizers, adjusting nutrient strength, diagnosing imbalances, or trying to maintain more consistent feeding between crops, stages, or water sources.

The calculator estimates nutrient-element ppm, not the total EC reading of the solution.

Target ppm helper

The target ppm helper works in reverse. Instead of estimating ppm from a known fertilizer amount, it estimates how much fertilizer is needed to reach a chosen nutrient ppm target at a given water volume. This is useful when building custom feeding recipes for hydroponics and fertigation.

It is especially practical for dry salts, powdered feeds, and single-element adjustments.

Best practice for growers

  1. Use the correct percentage for the actual nutrient element you want to estimate.
  2. Check whether your label values match elemental form or oxide form.
  3. Measure water volume accurately before calculating ppm.
  4. Use ppm calculations together with EC and pH monitoring, not as a full replacement.
  5. Keep records of ppm targets that work best for your crop and environment.

About us. Our 9 year history

GoToGarden started in 2017 out of personal frustration. Our founder was a hobby grower who spent hours navigating online shops that felt built by people who had never touched a plant — cluttered layouts, vague product descriptions, no real guidance on what to actually buy or why. He knew there had to be a better way.
