Irrigation frequency calculator for hydroponics, coco, and indoor growing

This irrigation frequency calculator helps growers estimate how often to water plants based on pot size, growing medium, plant stage, temperature, humidity, light level, and runoff strategy. It is useful for coco coir, soil, peat mixes, rockwool, hydroponic drip systems, and other indoor growing setups where irrigation timing affects root-zone performance and crop consistency.

Use it to estimate daily irrigation events, watering interval, per-plant water volume, and total irrigation demand for a grow zone or irrigation schedule.

How this irrigation calculator works

The calculator uses practical irrigation weighting based on water-holding capacity of the medium, crop stage, climate demand, and container size. It does not replace direct observation, but it gives a useful scheduling starting point for growers building a drip or hand-watering plan.

Higher temperature + lower humidity + stronger light = faster dryback
Smaller pots + lower water-holding media = more frequent irrigation
Larger plants + flowering stage = higher daily water demand

What each parameter means

  • Pot size: container volume for each plant.
  • Growing medium: root-zone substrate such as soil, coco, peat, rockwool, or clay pebbles.
  • Plant stage: seedling, vegetative, or flowering phase.
  • Air temperature: room or canopy temperature affecting transpiration.
  • Relative humidity: humidity level affecting dryback speed.
  • Light intensity: general light demand level used for a practical water-use estimate.
  • Target runoff: percentage of applied solution expected to drain out.

Why irrigation frequency matters

Irrigation timing affects oxygen in the root zone, nutrient delivery, runoff volume, media moisture stability, and dryback behavior. Watering too often can reduce root-zone oxygen and slow healthy dryback. Watering too rarely can cause excessive stress, salt concentration, and inconsistent plant growth.

The best schedule depends on the medium, container size, plant size, environment, and feeding strategy.

About runoff and daily water planning

Runoff is commonly used in coco and high-frequency fertigation to help manage salt balance and root-zone consistency. The runoff helper estimates how much solution drains out per event and how much total water volume is required for the whole zone per day.

This is especially useful for pump sizing, reservoir planning, and daily fertigation routines.

Best practice for growers

  1. Use the calculator as a starting point, then adjust based on actual dryback and plant response.
  2. Monitor pot weight, runoff, root-zone moisture, and plant posture regularly.
  3. Increase irrigation gradually as plants transition from veg into flower.
  4. Use runoff targets carefully; too much runoff can waste nutrient solution.
  5. Review irrigation together with climate, light intensity, and media type for better consistency.

About us. Our 9 year history

GoToGarden started in 2017 out of personal frustration. Our founder was a hobby grower who spent hours navigating online shops that felt built by people who had never touched a plant — cluttered layouts, vague product descriptions, no real guidance on what to actually buy or why. He knew there had to be a better way.
